MrChuTalks: Star Wars Blasphemy!! Gaming > Science (Day 12)

October 4th 2010

One thing caught my attention today.

Star Wars in 3D…

I heard of the news through IGN a couple of days ago but I didn’t have a chance to comment. So this results in this dicussion on the topic a bit out-of-date…

I am a big fan of the Star Wars series and I can see that re-releasing the epic saga is a BIG WIN for fans but obviously the 3D aspect is massivley frowned upon by many. Business-wise the idea is pretty smart of George Lucas. Many fans are willing to pay money to re-watch the Star Wars series due to it’s awesomeness and the 3D input into the film will be a minor cost for the George Lucas Company and it won’t be too hard to make up the money from the revenue gained from selling tickets + 3D extras.

I can see some point to 3D, [very little granted] but to be honest it really doesn’t add anything for me. Ever since the hype from Avatar, 3D has exploded across the film and TV industry. In Avatar the best 3D effect I gained from the film was the hologram maps which looked realistic.

So a Star Wars re-make in 3D offers no added incentive to watch. I don’t think 3D film and tv will be a big hit…

However I can see some aspects in the gaming side of this phenomenom. I haven’t tried out the 3D expierence in gaming yet but from what I have heard it is: Amazing, Epic, Confusing and Sickly…

My vision is set on hologram-based gaming in a 3D aspect. I imagine that Japan have probably started doing something similar to this idea already.

Imagine playing Fifa, NFL or NHL on a hologram table set. The players would be lit up on a table and you would have control over these individual characters and watch them in a very realistic manner. This idea of hologram could easily move onto RTS games like Starcraft or Civilisation. Conquering aliens and countries in a more interactive manner. RPG’s and other Shooters would follow and then gaming would be based on a hologram table format.

Gaming is a major factor in advancing technology. So many ideas and creative figments of the future are based on what the gaming industry reflects. The money involved in the gaming industry is huge and whatever scientist can conjure up after decades of research… The gaming industry can make a virtual reality.

Gaming is the stepping stone to greater technology.
